CENTRAL MICHIGAN REGION
Clare County and Isabella County

Quality of Life Clare County  |  Quality of Life Isabella County | Area Map  Clare County School District Map | Isabella County School District Map

The Central Michigan Region is located in the geographic center of Michigan’s lower peninsula, which is surrounded by the world’s largest reserve of fresh water. The area offers a unique lifestyle boasting the warmth and safety of many small communities of distinctive character – each proud of its pristine surroundings, local festivals, specialty shops and area charm. Fortunate to experience the magnificence of all four seasons, the inhabitants of The Central Michigan Region take pleasure in the many experiences of the great outdoors, specifically hunting, fishing, boating, and golfing. In addition, the Region also offers a broad-based environment usually found in much larger cities, namely with the attraction attributed to Central Michigan University, Mid Michigan Community College and the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort. The Region is within a 3-hour drive of every major market in Michigan and is linked to one of the largest industrial and consumer markets in the United States.

Mt. Pleasant, located in Isabella County, is the largest city in the Region. You’ll find several championship golf courses, casino gambling and wildlife exploration, all in the greater Mt. Pleasant area. What's more, there is plenty of specialty shopping and outdoor recreation. Mt. Pleasant plays host to countless cultural and theatrical events, as well as Central Michigan University NCAA Division I athletics.

Two family oriented communities near Mt. Pleasant are the Village of Shepherd and the Village of Lake Isabella.

Known as, “The sweetest little town anywhere around,” Shepherd is located just South of Mt. Pleasant and is home to the annual Maple Syrup Festival.

East of Mt. Pleasant is the picturesque Village of Lake Isabella. Lake Isabella is incorporated around a 1,100
acre all sports lake, has a championship golf course, and
a municipal airport with a half-mile airstrip.

Clare, the Region’s second largest city, is known statewide as the “Gateway to the North.” Clare is an ideal location for family living, which boasts such amenities as: bountiful hunting, fishing, and wildlife adventures, proximity to some 150 named lakes, exciting ski facilities, pleasant subdivisions, and an excellent school system.

Harrison, the Clare County seat and home to Mid Michigan Community College, supports an unlimited availability of year-round water related activities. It is also known for its outdoor activities including camping, golfing, skiing, and snowmobiling. It is truly a recreational paradise for both seasonal visitors and residents!

Farwell, located on the southern border of Clare County, was established in 1870 along the Pere Marquette Railroad line. The village still retains its small town atmosphere, is supported by small businesses and several manufacturing firms, and plays a role in local tourism due to its proximity to lakes and skiing. It is also the site of a tax-free, industrial Renaissance Zone.

The Region is rich with quality educational opportunities. All communities in the Region provide the choice of excellent public and private schools, area vocational centers, and alternative education programs. Now with campuses in both Clare and Mt. Pleasant, Mid Michigan Community College serves students from throughout the Central Michigan Region. Moreover, Central Michigan University, located in Mt. Pleasant, is a comprehensive public university, offering high quality academic programs, strong student services, and numerous relationships with business and industry.

The Central Michigan Region is home to The Saginaw ChippewaSaginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan Indian Tribe, which boasts the biggest and best gaming destination in the Midwest – the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort having over 4,300 slots, plenty of table games and the highest stakes bingo in Michigan. With 514 guest rooms, the Soaring Eagle Resort is decorated in a woodland Indian motif and has over $2 million of American artwork exhibited throughout the property. In addition to its beautiful guest rooms, meeting rooms and spa, the resort features three dining rooms – Water Lily Restaurant, Firefly Buffet, and Sinii Kaung Steak and Chop House – in addition to its lounge, snack bars and cafés. Events at the Soaring Eagle Resort include top comedy, music and sports entertainment from around the world.

Across the street from the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort is The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe’s Ziibiwing Center, which was created to enlighten and educate all communities in the rich culture, heritage, and history of the Anishinabek people of the Great Lakes. Featuring the Diba Jimooyung: Telling Our Story permanent exhibit, changing exhibits, lectures, and educational workshops, the Ziibiwing Center provides learning opportunities for all ages. The Ziibiwing Center’s Mission Statement best describes its objective and significance to the greater Mt. Pleasant area.

“The Ziibiwing Center is a distinctive treasure created to provide an enriched, diversified and culturally relevant educational experience. This promotes the society’s belief that the culture, diversity and spirit of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan and other Great Lakes Anishinabek must be recognized, perpetuated, communicated and supported.”

The citizens of the Central Michigan Region take great pride in their community and are committed to maintaining the area’s high standard of economic excellence. Unique opportunities are also afforded the community through the City of Mt. Pleasant’s sister-city relationships and exchanges with Okaya, Japan and Valdivia, Chile. With a strong business climate, a central and convenient location with quick access to nearby major markets, significant interaction with Central Michigan University and proximity to Michigan’s favorite vacationlands, the Central Michigan Region is an ideal place to live, to work, and to “grow” a business.
